We have to be careful when asking people to opt in to text messaging and emails. Below are guidelines for the United States. Guidelines for Canada are attached.
DO NOT
Require a "yes" opt-in for submission of a form. This means that if cell phone is a required field to submit the form, you need to use the checkbox method instead of a disclaimer.
DO
Use this language:
- Sample language for a checkbox to be used with a required phone number field. It can (and usually should) be checked off on forms by default, as long as members are allowed to uncheck it.
- English: Check “Text OK” to sign up for recurring text messages from your union. Message and data rates may apply. No purchase necessary.
- Sample language for a disclaimer placed under a non-requiredphone number field.
- English: By providing my phone number, I am opting to receive recurring text messages from UNITE HERE and that standard message & data rates may apply. I understand that I can unsubscribe at any time.
